dc.description.abstract | Ireland has a cool-temperate climate and frequent rainfall which provides a suitable environment for rich, arable soil. Agriculture has always been a crucial part of Irish society, sustaining the country’s food stocks and revenue throughout the years. The agricultural sector employs 8.6 % of the total working population, with two thirds of Irish land dedicated to this sector, consisting of 139,600 medium sized farms, > 18,000 dairy farms, and 1,787 organic farms (4). Most agricultural activities can have major impacts on the soil and its surrounding environment; therefore it is important to assess these effects to progress towards a more sustainable future (3). | en_US |
